Designing an Integrated Financial Management System for Multipurpose Cooperatives in North Central Nigeria

Multipurpose cooperative societies in North Central Nigeria manage diverse financial flows including savings, loans, agricultural input procurement, and retail trading, without the benefit of structured financial management systems adapted to their multi-function nature. This study designed an integrated financial management system tailored for multipurpose cooperatives in the North Central geopolitical zone, using Benue, Kogi, and Nasarawa States as development contexts. A programme design methodology was adopted, comprising needs assessment, system architecture design, and stakeholder validation. Needs assessment involved structured interviews with cooperative treasurers, accountants, and state cooperative finance officers across fifteen cooperatives and three state offices. Design principles were drawn from cooperative accounting standards, micro-enterprise financial management literature, and NACRDB guidelines. The integrated system encompasses five modules: member ledger management, savings and loan management, input procurement and inventory accounts, surplus computation and dividend allocation, and annual financial statement generation. Digital and paper-based variants were designed to accommodate cooperative societies with and without reliable power supply. Pilot testing with five multipurpose cooperatives in Makurdi confirmed the system's usability and reduced reporting time from an average of eleven hours to three hours per monthly financial cycle. Expert review by eight cooperative accounting specialists validated design adequacy. The study recommends state cooperative departments across North Central Nigeria adopt the system as a mandatory financial management standard for all registered multipurpose cooperatives with more than fifty members.
