Microfinance Institutions and Financial Inclusion Among Rural Women in Sokoto State

📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW

This study examines the role of microfinance institutions in promoting financial inclusion among rural women in Sokoto State, North West Nigeria. Women in rural Nigeria face significant barriers to formal financial services, including geographic distance from bank branches, low financial literacy, absence of acceptable collateral, and cultural restrictions on independent financial decision-making. Microfinance institutions, with their community-based delivery models and group lending approaches, have been proposed as an effective solution for closing this inclusion gap. This study adopts a survey design, collecting data from 140 rural women who are either current or former clients of five licensed microfinance banks operating in Sokoto and Tambuwal. Financial inclusion is assessed using access to credit, savings product ownership, insurance coverage, and digital payment adoption as indicators. Regression and descriptive statistics are applied. Results indicate that microfinance clients demonstrate significantly higher financial inclusion rates than non-clients, particularly in credit access and savings behavior. However, digital payment adoption remains very low even among microfinance users, reflecting infrastructure and literacy barriers. Group lending schemes were identified as the most effective financial product for reaching previously excluded women. The study concludes that microfinance institutions play a vital but incomplete role in advancing rural women's financial inclusion in Sokoto State. It recommends that the Central Bank of Nigeria strengthen the rural microfinance infrastructure through targeted capital grants and agent banking expansion in underserved communities.
