An Original Theoretical Model of Demographic Resilience in Post-Conflict Communities in Nigeria

Demographic resilience, the capacity of a population to recover its vital rates, demographic composition, and household structures after severe conflict disruption, is a concept with significant practical implications for recovery programming but insufficient theoretical development for African post-conflict contexts. This study developed an original theoretical model of demographic resilience in post-conflict communities in Nigeria, with empirical grounding in North East and North Central Nigeria. A theory-building methodology employing longitudinal retrospective analysis and expert consultation was used. Retrospective demographic surveys were conducted in 24 communities in Borno, Adamawa, and Plateau States at different stages of post-conflict recovery (0 to 3 years, 3 to 7 years, and more than 7 years since major conflict). Demographic resilience indicators included fertility rate recovery, mortality rate trajectory, household structure reconstitution, and displaced population return rates. Analysis showed that communities with strong pre-conflict social capital (measured by religious and ethnic association density) showed significantly faster demographic resilience across all indicators. Access to healthcare restored within 18 months of conflict cessation was the strongest structural predictor of under-five mortality rate recovery. Fertility rates rebounded above pre-conflict levels (post-conflict baby boom) in 75 percent of communities 3 to 5 years after cessation. The original Demographic Resilience Framework for Nigerian Post-Conflict Communities specifies four resilience dimensions: vital rate restoration, household structure recovery, health system reconstitution, and social capital reactivation. Expert review confirmed original theoretical contribution.
