📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW
This study analyses electronic mail usage patterns and their alignment with professional communication standards in Plateau State Government offices, in Nigeria's North Central geopolitical zone. Email has become the dominant mode of formal written communication in government offices, yet its usage in many Nigerian public institutions deviates from accepted professional norms due to inadequate training and weak policy enforcement. Using a survey research design, the study targets administrative officers, registry staff, and departmental heads in six Plateau State ministries. Data are collected through self-administered questionnaires and content analysis of anonymised email samples provided by consenting participants. The Communication Standards Framework and the Organisational Communication Theory provide conceptual grounding, with reference to literature published between 2021 and 2024. The study evaluates dimensions including email tone, structure, response time, file management, and compliance with official communication guidelines. It also identifies systemic factors contributing to non-professional email usage. Recommendations are directed at the Plateau State Civil Service Commission and the Office of the Secretary to the State Government. Keywords: electronic mail, professional communication, government offices, Plateau State, office management
