📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW
Compliance with World Meteorological Organization (WMO) observation standards at synoptic stations is fundamental to ensuring that Nigerian meteorological data contributes reliable and internationally comparable records to the Global Climate Observing System. This study assesses compliance with WMO-No. 8 Guide to Meteorological Instruments and Methods of Observation at NiMet synoptic stations in the North East geopolitical zone, covering stations in Maiduguri, Yola, Gombe, Bauchi, Nguru, and Potiskum. A structured station compliance audit was conducted at each site, evaluating instrument siting, screen condition, calibration status, observing schedules, and observer training levels against WMO standards. Instrument calibration certificates were inspected and calibration intervals assessed. Results reveal that three of the six audited stations fail the WMO siting criteria for thermometer screens due to proximity to buildings, shade trees, or paved surfaces that may introduce measurement bias. Calibration records are missing for rain gauges at Nguru and Potiskum for periods exceeding 24 months. Observer training documentation reveals that four stations have staff who have not attended a NiMet refresher observing course in more than five years. Overall compliance scores ranged from 51 percent at Potiskum to 79 percent at Maiduguri. Recommendations include a prioritized station rehabilitation program targeting the three lowest-scoring sites and mandatory biannual observer competency assessments. Keywords: WMO standards, synoptic station, compliance, observation quality, North East Nigeria.
