📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW
Lagos Island hosts one of the most established Chinese diaspora communities in Nigeria, characterised by a mix of long-term residents, recent migrants, and business travellers from mainland China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. This study examines the social life, internal networks, and community organisations of the Chinese diaspora on Lagos Island, drawing on sociological perspectives of immigrant community formation. A qualitative research design was employed, incorporating ethnographic observation over four months, semi-structured interviews with 20 Chinese residents, and analysis of Chinese community association records and WeChat group communications. The Chinese community on Lagos Island is found to be segmented along mainland-Taiwan and regional mainland Chinese lines, with separate social associations for different hometown affiliations. Chinese-language churches and Buddhist temples serve as social anchors. WeChat groups function as the primary communication infrastructure, managing business referrals, social events, and mutual aid. Integration with Nigerian social networks is limited but commercially functional. Second-generation Chinese-Nigerians demonstrate stronger Nigerian social integration but remain a small minority. The study concludes that the Lagos Island Chinese community maintains strong internal social cohesion but limited cross-cultural integration with Nigerian society. Improved social programmes and intercultural forums involving both Chinese and Nigerian communities are recommended to build constructive coexistence in the South West zone.
