📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW
Effective member communication is fundamental to cooperative democratic participation, trust-building, and the capacity of members to hold management accountable. However, most cooperative societies in Kano State lack structured member communication strategies, relying on ad hoc announcements that reach only a fraction of their membership. This study developed a member communication strategy framework for cooperative societies in Kano State, North West Nigeria. A programme development approach combining needs assessment, communication audit, and stakeholder co-design was adopted. The needs assessment involved structured questionnaires administered to 180 members and 40 cooperative managers from twenty cooperatives in Kano Municipal, Fagge, and Dala LGAs, assessing information needs, preferred communication channels, and current communication practice gaps. A communication audit documented existing communication materials and channel usage. Co-design workshops with eight cooperative managers and six communication specialists produced the strategic framework. The strategy framework addresses six communication dimensions: regular financial update disclosure, meeting notification standards, leadership election communication, member complaint channels, digital and analogue channel integration, and language inclusivity through Hausa-language materials. A budget model for basic communication implementation appropriate to small cooperative scale is included. The framework was validated by twelve stakeholders from the cooperative and development communication sectors. The study recommends that the Kano State Cooperative Federation adopt the framework as a membership retention and democratic participation tool for all affiliated primary societies.
