Developing a Technology Adoption Roadmap for Digital Transformation of Cooperative Societies in South West Nigeria

Digital transformation offers cooperative societies in South West Nigeria opportunities to improve member services, financial management, and democratic participation, but most cooperatives lack structured roadmaps for technology adoption. This study developed a technology adoption roadmap for digitally transforming cooperative societies in the South West geopolitical zone, drawing on Lagos, Ogun, and Osun States. A technology readiness assessment and programme development methodology was employed. Technology readiness was assessed across forty cooperative societies using a validated digital readiness questionnaire covering infrastructure access, staff digital literacy, membership digital capability, and willingness to adopt digital tools. A needs analysis identified priority technology use cases: digital savings collection, loan management software, mobile member communication, and digital financial reporting. Comparative analysis of fintech-cooperative integration models from Kenya's Cooperative Bank, Ghana's CUNA Mutual Group, and Nigeria's LAPO Microfinance informed roadmap design. The resulting roadmap encompasses three adoption phases: Phase 1 covering mobile payments and digital member registers; Phase 2 addressing digital loan management and member communication apps; and Phase 3 involving full financial management system integration. Implementation timelines, cost estimates, and change management guidance are provided for each phase. The roadmap was validated by fifteen cooperative managers, technology specialists, and cooperative educators. The study recommends the Southwest Cooperative Alliance adopt the roadmap as a digital transformation guide, supported by a Technology Adoption Grant from the state-level cooperative development funds.
