📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW
This study examines the relationship between educational supervision practices and teacher performance in public secondary schools in Rivers State, South South Nigeria. Supervision of instruction is a core function of educational management, intended to provide professional guidance, identify weaknesses, and support continuous improvement in classroom practice. In Rivers State, the frequency and quality of supervisory visits by both internal school supervisors and external education inspectors have been inconsistent, raising questions about their effect on teaching quality. A descriptive survey design was adopted, with data from 250 teachers across 20 secondary schools in Port Harcourt, Obio-Akpor, and Eleme local government areas. Supervision practices were assessed using a structured interview and questionnaire measuring visit frequency, feedback quality, follow-up action, and teacher perception of supervisory support. Teacher performance was rated using head teacher assessments and classroom observation scores from education officers. Pearson correlation and regression analysis were applied. Results show that supportive and developmental supervision is significantly associated with higher teacher performance ratings. Punitive or evaluative-only supervision showed no positive relationship with performance and was negatively associated with teacher job satisfaction. The study concludes that developmental educational supervision significantly improves teacher performance in Rivers State secondary schools. It recommends that the Rivers State Secondary Education Commission retrain all school-level supervisors in coaching and mentoring approaches and introduce a minimum supervision frequency standard of four classroom observations per teacher per term.
