📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW
This study examines the effect of staff motivation on office productivity in the Sokoto State Ministry of Finance, within Nigeria's North West geopolitical zone. Motivation is widely recognised as a fundamental driver of employee behaviour and organisational performance, yet the specific mechanisms linking motivation to office productivity in Nigeria's state finance ministries remain understudied. Using a descriptive survey design, the study targets administrative and clerical staff, including accounts officers, executive assistants, and registry personnel in the Ministry. Structured questionnaires incorporating validated motivation scales are administered to 120 randomly selected respondents. The Maslow Hierarchy of Needs and the Herzberg Motivation-Hygiene Theory provide the theoretical framework, supported by literature from 2020 to 2024. The study investigates both intrinsic motivators (recognition, career development, sense of purpose) and extrinsic motivators (salary, promotion, work conditions), examining their relative impact on productivity indicators such as attendance, output quality, and initiative-taking. Recommendations are directed at the Sokoto State Ministry of Finance management and the Sokoto State Civil Service Commission. Keywords: staff motivation, office productivity, Ministry of Finance, Sokoto State, public administration
