Evaluation of Office Space Planning and Its Effect on Administrative Staff Performance in Oyo State Secretariat

This research evaluates office space planning practices and their effect on the administrative performance of staff in the Oyo State Secretariat, Ibadan, within Nigeria's South West geopolitical zone. Office space planning, encompassing the physical layout, allocation, ergonomic design, and functional organisation of workspaces, directly influences employee comfort, communication efficiency, and task concentration. The study uses a descriptive survey design, targeting administrative officers, registry staff, and heads of departments in eight ministries housed within the secretariat complex. Data collection instruments include structured questionnaires and physical workspace observation checklists. The study is theoretically informed by the Environmental Psychology Theory and the Sociotechnical Systems Model, with reference to literature from 2020 to 2024. Specific space planning dimensions examined include open versus enclosed office arrangements, shared facility adequacy, lighting conditions, and proximity to relevant departments. Recommendations are directed at the Oyo State Physical Planning Ministry and the Office of the Governor's Chief of Staff.
