Influence of Bureaucratic Processes on Administrative Efficiency in Zamfara State Civil Service

This study examines the influence of bureaucratic processes on administrative efficiency in the Zamfara State Civil Service, within Nigeria's North West geopolitical zone. Bureaucratic structures, while providing order and accountability in public administration, have been widely criticised for creating procedural bottlenecks that slow decision-making and service delivery in Nigerian state governments. The research adopts a descriptive survey design, targeting senior and middle-grade administrative officers in six Zamfara State ministries. Data are collected through structured questionnaires and semi-structured interviews with civil service commissioners. The Weberian Bureaucracy Theory and the New Public Management Framework provide the theoretical context, with supporting literature from 2020 to 2024 on bureaucracy and governance in West Africa. The study investigates specific inefficiency manifestations including excessive approval chains, slow correspondence turnaround, and resistance to process reform. It also assesses civil servants' perceptions of existing procedures and their reform preferences. Recommendations are directed at the Zamfara State Head of Service and the Governor's Office on administrative reform.
