Perceptions of Chinese Employers Among Nigerian Workers in Ogun State Export Processing Zones

📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW

The Ogun-Guangdong Free Trade Zone and associated export processing zones in Ogun State host the largest concentration of Chinese manufacturing enterprises in Nigeria, creating a unique social environment for examining Sino-Nigerian workplace dynamics. This study investigates Nigerian workers' perceptions of Chinese employers, focusing on management styles, workplace communication, labour rights, and cultural differences. A cross-sectional survey design was employed, and structured questionnaires were administered to 250 Nigerian workers employed in five Chinese-owned manufacturing plants within the Ogun-Guangdong Free Trade Zone. Supplementary interviews with ten Nigerian human resource officers and six Chinese plant managers provided qualitative depth. Findings reveal that 61 percent of Nigerian respondents rate their Chinese employers as demanding but productive, citing strict punctuality requirements and high production targets as distinctive features. Language barriers are identified as the most significant workplace challenge, with 78 percent reporting communication difficulties affecting task clarity. Safety protocols were rated as inadequate by 44 percent of workers. However, 56 percent acknowledge wage levels as competitive relative to comparable Nigerian-owned enterprises. Cultural sensitivity training for Chinese managers is identified as the most commonly requested intervention. The study concludes that sustainable Sino-Nigerian workplace relations in Ogun State require structured intercultural management training, bilingual workplace communication standards, and enhanced enforcement of Nigerian labour law within free trade zone boundaries in the South West region.
