📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW
The oil and gas sector in Nigeria is a major consumer of specialised polymer products including pipeline coatings, downhole sealing elements, and cable insulation materials, yet the professional development needs of polymer engineers working within this sector have not been systematically characterised. This study conducts a professional development needs assessment for polymer engineers employed in oil and gas companies operating in the Niger Delta and Lagos regions of South South and South West Nigeria. A validated needs assessment questionnaire was administered to 95 polymer and materials engineers across upstream, midstream, and downstream segments. Competency gaps were assessed across technical domains including materials specification, failure analysis, corrosion protection, non-destructive testing interpretation, and materials data management. Preferred professional development modalities and current training provision levels were also assessed. Results identify failure analysis methodology, advanced polymer materials characterisation, and corrosion inhibitor coating selection as the three highest-priority technical competency gaps, rated critical by more than 60 percent of respondents. Only 35 percent reported employer-sponsored polymer-specific training in the preceding 24 months. Most respondents preferred blended learning formats combining online self-paced modules with short intensive workshops. The study recommends the development of a modular professional certification programme in oil and gas polymer engineering, delivered in partnership between Nigerian universities and industry technical associations. Findings provide evidence-based input for curriculum design in continuing professional development programmes for polymer engineers in the Nigerian energy sector.
