Secretarial Professionalism and Workplace Productivity in Selected Banks in Lagos, South West Nigeria

📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW

This study examines the relationship between secretarial professionalism and workplace productivity in selected commercial banks in Lagos, Nigeria's commercial hub in the South West geopolitical zone. The secretarial function remains a critical interface between executive management and organisational operations, particularly in high-volume financial environments. Using a survey research design, the study targets executive assistants, administrative secretaries, and office managers in ten commercial banks on Lagos Island. Data are gathered through structured questionnaires and validated productivity performance checklists. The theoretical framework draws on the Human Capital Theory and the Administrative Management Theory, with reference to literature published between 2020 and 2024. The study examines dimensions of professionalism including confidentiality, communication competence, task prioritisation, and adherence to ethical office standards. It also evaluates how these dimensions influence measurable productivity indicators such as correspondence turnaround time, meeting organisation quality, and executive support effectiveness. Findings are expected to reveal a significant positive relationship between secretarial competence and organisational output. Recommendations will address training needs, professional certification, and role recognition within the banking sector. Keywords: secretarial professionalism, workplace productivity, commercial banks, Lagos, office management
