Study of Daycare Centre Design Quality and Child Development Environment in Abuja

The design quality of daycare centre environments has a direct and measurable influence on the cognitive development, social interaction, and physical safety of young children in their critical early years, making architectural assessment of these settings a matter of developmental importance. This study assesses the design quality and child development environment of ten registered daycare centres in Abuja FCT, examining spatial provision, sensory stimulation, outdoor play access, safety provisions, and health environment quality. A structured physical audit framework based on the ECERS-R environmental rating scale principles was adapted for the Nigerian context and applied to each facility. Direct observations of child activity patterns and staff supervision arrangements supplemented the physical audit. Manager and carer interviews provided operational context. Results indicate significant variation in quality between facilities operating in purpose-designed premises and those operating in converted residential buildings. Purpose-designed centres scored significantly higher on spatial provision, toilet accessibility, outdoor play area safety, and natural light quality. Across all ten centres, outdoor play space fell below the recommended minimum of seven square metres per child in seven cases. Sensory environmental quality, encompassing colour, tactile materials, acoustic absorption, and display provision, was rated below adequate in six centres. Emergency exit provision was non-compliant in four facilities. The study recommends the development of a daycare centre design code specific to the FCT, the inclusion of minimum outdoor play area standards in FCT daycare registration requirements, and mandatory architectural review of daycare premises before registration.
