Documenting Chinese Wedding Customs and Their Social Meanings Among Chinese Residents in Port Harcourt

Wedding practices represent one of the most culturally embedded and socially meaningful dimensions of human life, and observing how Chinese residents in Port Harcourt navigate matrimonial customs in a Nigerian context offers rich insight into cultural identity maintenance under migration conditions. This study documents the wedding customs observed by Chinese residents in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, and examines the social meanings attached to these practices. A qualitative ethnographic design was employed, with participant observation at three Chinese weddings, semi-structured interviews with 18 Chinese residents of varying marital statuses, and documentary analysis of WeChat records and wedding planning materials. Findings indicate that Chinese residents in Port Harcourt largely maintain traditional Chinese wedding conventions, including the betrothal gift, tea ceremony, and red colour symbolism, while adapting logistical arrangements to the Nigerian context. Hybrid ceremonies blending Chinese and Christian elements are emerging, particularly among second-generation Chinese-Nigerians. Wedding events serve as critical social bonding moments within the Chinese diaspora community, reinforcing hometown affiliations and business networks. Nigerian cultural elements have been selectively incorporated by some couples. The study concludes that Chinese wedding practices in Port Harcourt serve as important cultural identity anchors while demonstrating meaningful adaptive flexibility, and recommends documenting these hybrid practices as a component of South South Nigeria's evolving multicultural heritage record.
