📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW
The quality, cultural appropriateness, and pedagogical effectiveness of teaching materials used in Nigerian university Mandarin programmes significantly affects learning outcomes. This study conducts a critical review of Chinese language teaching materials used across six Nigerian universities, examining their content, cultural representations of China, difficulty progression, and suitability for Nigerian learners. A document analysis research design was adopted, evaluating eighteen textbooks, audio resources, and supplementary materials currently in use at university Chinese Studies departments in Lagos, Kano, Enugu, Maiduguri, Ibadan, and Zaria. Materials were evaluated using a five-criteria framework covering linguistic sequencing, cultural content balance, Nigeria-relevant contextualisation, technological integration, and assessment alignment. Findings indicate that the majority of materials in use are published by Chinese institutions and assume learners from North East or South East Asian cultural contexts, limiting their relevance for Nigerian students. Cultural references are overwhelmingly China-centric, with minimal bridging content connecting Chinese concepts to Nigerian cultural equivalents. Difficulty progressions are generally appropriate. Few materials include Nigerian context scenarios for dialogue practice or business communication. The study concludes that Nigerian-developed or Nigeria-contextualised Mandarin teaching materials are urgently needed, and recommends that a Consortium of Nigerian Chinese Studies Departments collaborate with Confucius Institutes to co-develop Nigeria-specific Mandarin learning resources.
