Sino-Nigerian Joint Ventures in the Construction Sector: Worker Experiences in Bayelsa State

Sino-Nigerian joint ventures in the construction sector have proliferated across South South Nigeria's oil-producing states, with Bayelsa State hosting several significant Chinese-partnered building and engineering projects. This study investigates the employment experiences, skill acquisition outcomes, and intercultural relations of Nigerian workers employed in Sino-Nigerian joint venture construction sites in Bayelsa State. A descriptive survey design was adopted, with questionnaires administered to 180 Nigerian workers on four active construction sites in Yenagoa and its environs, supplemented by interviews with five Nigerian site supervisors and three Chinese project managers. Findings indicate that Nigerian workers represent 72 percent of the workforce by headcount but are concentrated in unskilled and semi-skilled roles. Only 18 percent of Nigerian respondents report receiving formal skills training beyond basic site induction. Communication between Nigerian and Chinese workers is predominantly managed through bilingual Nigerian supervisors, creating information bottlenecks. Wage levels are rated as acceptable by 58 percent of respondents. Safety practices are rated as adequate by 64 percent. Positive intercultural learning was noted by 41 percent of respondents who report informal knowledge exchange with Chinese colleagues. The study concludes that Sino-Nigerian construction joint ventures in Bayelsa State provide valuable employment but must formalise skills transfer components and worker safety protocols. State government oversight of joint venture compliance is recommended as a priority.
