📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW
Strabismus, or squint, is a significant cause of binocular vision dysfunction in children and can lead to permanent loss of stereopsis if not treated in the critical period of visual development. This study assesses stereopsis in children with strabismus attending the Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital eye clinic in Zaria, Kaduna State, North West Nigeria. A cross-sectional descriptive study will be conducted among 180 children aged 3 to 12 years diagnosed with strabismus. Stereoacuity will be measured using the Randot Preschool Stereoacuity test and the Lang Stereotest, with additional assessments including cover tests, prism cover tests, and visual acuity measurement. Medical records will be reviewed to document age of onset, type of strabismus, history of patching, and surgical or optical interventions. Data analysis will involve descriptive statistics and ANOVA to compare stereopsis outcomes across age groups and strabismus types. The study expects to find significantly reduced or absent stereopsis in children with constant strabismus and earlier age of onset. Findings will inform clinical management protocols for strabismus at the hospital and will be presented to the Nigerian Optometry Council to advocate for expanded binocular vision services in pediatric eye care. This research contributes important clinical evidence to the management of strabismus-associated visual loss in northern Nigeria.
