Knowledge of First Aid Eye Care Among Secondary School Teachers in Katsina State

Teachers are often the first responders when students sustain eye injuries at school, making adequate knowledge of first aid eye care among educators a matter of public health significance. This study assesses the level of knowledge of first aid eye care among secondary school teachers in Katsina State, North West Nigeria. A descriptive cross-sectional design will be employed, targeting 320 teachers from 10 secondary schools across the Katsina, Daura, and Funtua local government areas. A structured, self-administered questionnaire developed and validated by the research team will assess teachers' knowledge of correct first aid responses to chemical eye injuries, foreign body presence, blunt trauma, and corneal abrasions. Data analysis will involve frequency tables, percentages, and chi-square tests to assess associations between knowledge levels and sociodemographic variables including years of teaching experience and academic qualifications. The study expects to find that the majority of teachers lack basic knowledge of appropriate first aid procedures for common ocular injuries. Recommendations will target the Katsina State Teaching Service Board to integrate eye first aid training into teacher professional development programs. This research fills an important gap in the literature on school eye health preparedness in northern Nigeria and provides actionable evidence for building teacher capacity in basic ocular first aid across the North West geopolitical zone.
