Assessment of Low Vision Rehabilitation Needs Among Visually Impaired Adults in Ibadan, Oyo State

Low vision rehabilitation services aim to maximize the functional use of residual vision through the prescription of optical aids, training, and environmental modification. In Nigeria, access to such services remains limited, even in urban centers. This study assesses the low vision rehabilitation needs and current service utilization among visually impaired adults in Ibadan, Oyo State, South West Nigeria. A cross-sectional descriptive study will be conducted, targeting 250 adults with confirmed low vision (best-corrected visual acuity of less than 6/18 in the better eye) recruited from two teaching hospitals and a special needs center in Ibadan. Assessment tools will include visual acuity and contrast sensitivity measurements, functional vision questionnaires, and the Low Vision Quality of Life Questionnaire. Interviews will document current use of optical aids and awareness of available rehabilitation services. Data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics and regression analysis. The study expects to find significant unmet rehabilitation needs, particularly for near work and mobility, alongside a low rate of prescribed optical aid use. Findings will be submitted to the College of Medicine, University of Ibadan and the Oyo State Ministry of Health to guide investment in low vision rehabilitation infrastructure. This research provides a foundation for expanding evidence-based low vision care services in the South West zone and contributes to the national conversation on disability-inclusive healthcare in Nigeria.
