Assessment of Intraocular Pressure Among Adults with Family History of Glaucoma in Akure, Ondo State

Family history of glaucoma is one of the most significant risk factors for primary open-angle glaucoma, yet many individuals with this risk factor in Nigeria remain unscreened. This study assesses intraocular pressure levels among adults with a family history of glaucoma in Akure, Ondo State, South West Nigeria. A cross-sectional descriptive study will be conducted among 320 adults aged 30 years and above who have at least one first-degree relative diagnosed with glaucoma. Participants will be recruited from churches, community centers, and outpatient clinics across three local government areas in Akure. Intraocular pressure will be measured using a non-contact tonometer and confirmed with Goldmann applanation tonometry where elevated readings are found. Additional ocular assessments will include optic disc evaluation using a direct ophthalmoscope and automated visual field screening where possible. A structured questionnaire will capture family history details, prior eye examination history, and awareness of glaucoma risk. Data analysis will involve descriptive statistics and chi-square tests. The study expects to identify elevated intraocular pressure in a significant proportion of at-risk participants who have never had an eye examination. Findings will support glaucoma screening campaigns in the South West zone and provide evidence for targeted intervention among high-risk family groups in Ondo State.
