Assessment of Digital Eye Strain Among University Students in Abuja, FCT

📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW

The rapid integration of digital devices into academic life has led to a growing concern about digital eye strain, also known as computer vision syndrome, among university students. This study assesses the prevalence and associated factors of digital eye strain among undergraduate students at the University of Abuja, located in the Federal Capital Territory, North Central geopolitical zone. A descriptive cross-sectional study involving 420 undergraduate students will be conducted using a stratified sampling technique to ensure representation across all faculties. A validated digital eye strain questionnaire will be administered to assess the frequency and severity of symptoms, including eye fatigue, headaches, dry eyes, and blurred vision, as well as daily screen exposure patterns and ergonomic practices. Data will be analyzed using SPSS with descriptive and inferential methods. High prevalence rates of digital eye strain are anticipated, particularly among students with more than six hours of daily screen time. Findings will offer guidance for optometric public health campaigns targeting university campuses and will inform institutional policies on screen time management and ergonomic workstation design. The study also intends to document differences in symptom burden across academic levels and gender categories. By providing evidence specific to the North Central zone, this research advances the conversation on digital health in Nigerian higher education and underscores the relevance of optometric services in campus health programs. Keywords: digital eye strain, computer vision syndrome, university students, Abuja, screen time
