📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW
This study investigates the compliance challenges faced by Nigerian financial institutions with European operations or European client portfolios in meeting the requirements of the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). As Nigerian banks, fintech companies, and insurance firms expand into European markets or process data of European Union residents, GDPR compliance has emerged as a critical professional obligation with significant regulatory and reputational implications. This applied research draws on legal analysis of GDPR requirements, European Data Protection Board (EDPB) enforcement decisions affecting African entities, and Nigerian Data Protection Commission (NDPC) guidance notes. Structured interviews with data protection officers, compliance managers, and legal counsel in Nigerian financial institutions with European operations in Lagos and Abuja provide primary data. The study examines the specific GDPR provisions, including data transfer rules, consent management, and right-to-erasure obligations, that pose the greatest professional compliance challenges for Nigerian institutions, and evaluates current compliance management practices. The research also examines how Nigeria's own data protection legislation, the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023, intersects with and potentially facilitates GDPR compliance. Findings yield practical professional recommendations for data governance improvement in Nigerian financial institutions with EU exposure. Keywords: GDPR compliance, Nigerian financial institutions, data protection, fintech, EU data regulation.
