Professional Development Needs of European Studies Graduates in Nigerian Foreign Service

This research investigates the professional development needs of European Studies graduates who have entered the Nigerian Foreign Service, examining the alignment between their academic training and the practical competencies demanded by diplomatic careers focused on European affairs. As Nigeria's foreign policy increasingly engages with complex EU institutions, bilateral relationships with European states, and multilateral European forums, the need for professionally trained European specialists in the diplomatic corps has grown. This applied study uses a structured survey instrument administered to Nigerian foreign service officers with European postings or Europe-focused responsibilities, supplemented by in-depth interviews with senior diplomats and Nigerian Institute of International Affairs (NIIA) training staff. The study examines competency gaps in areas including EU institutional knowledge, multilateral negotiation skills, European languages, and cross-cultural professional communication. It also assesses the adequacy of pre-posting training provided by the Nigerian Foreign Service Institute (NIFSI) and evaluates how postgraduate-level European Studies training compares to on-the-job experiential learning. Findings are expected to contribute to the professionalisation of Nigerian diplomatic capacity in European affairs and to inform curriculum development for PGD programmes in European Studies at Nigerian universities.
