Project Management Practices in Non-Governmental Organizations Operating in Displaced Communities of Borno State, North East Nigeria

Non-governmental organizations (NGOs) operating in humanitarian contexts must apply adaptive project management practices suited to volatile and resource-constrained environments. This study examines project management practices in NGOs delivering humanitarian and development programs in displaced communities in Borno State, North East Nigeria. A cross-sectional survey will recruit 130 project coordinators, program officers, M and E specialists, and field managers from 15 international and local NGOs active in Maiduguri and Bama. A structured questionnaire will assess planning adaptability, risk management, beneficiary engagement, data-driven decision-making, and reporting quality. The OECD-DAC project management criteria of relevance, coherence, effectiveness, efficiency, impact, and sustainability will frame outcome assessments. Descriptive statistics and regression analysis will identify practice gaps. Humanitarian project management in Borno is complicated by security restrictions, community displacement, and evolving program mandates, creating unique PM challenges. Findings will inform project management training programs for NGO staff and contribute to humanitarian project management knowledge from North East Nigeria.
